Connect to anything with an API

Dec 12, 2024 | 4 minutes
connect almost anything

At Make one of our core missions is to enable seamless connection with any API-powered software. While Make users can connect to over 2,000 apps, we believe that one missing app should never be a blocker to achieving your automation goals and unlocking the true value of Make as a platform.

This is one of the reasons why we aim to provide fast and reliable ways for a new app to be created, published, and maintained. This is a constant challenge as there are over 30,000 SaaS solutions on the market - and this number is growing all the time, especially with the rise of AI.

App integrations

At Make we maintain over 1,000 of the most commonly used SaaS applications. These apps are developed and maintained by the Make team.

For the apps we develop and maintain, we ensure that their existing functionality keeps working when the underlying API changes. Based on an app’s popularity we also implement new features. In cases where there is a breaking change, we communicate this to the affected customers in time along with information on how they should proceed.

To request new verified applications we also invite users to share or vote on ideas posted in the Make Idea Exchange

A community of builders

At Make, we have a strong and growing community of developers and builders. This community plays a key role in growing and expanding our integration offering.

The community has so far created over 1,000 public apps, where more than 700 are verified apps and roughly 300 are community apps - the difference being that verified apps are verified by Make, available as part of the subscription, and installed within Make by default. To be verified, an app must also adhere to key principles, standards, and best practices and of course, pass a range of rigorous tests.

Using webhooks and universal connector

We recognize of course that there may be times when you might be using less common or custom systems in your business and can’t find the app in our inventory. To accommodate these situations, with Make you can connect to anything with an API using HTTP and webhooks. For those less familiar with HTTP and webhooks, you can now generate an HTTP app with the help of an AI Assistant. This is as simple as using the AI assistant to generate the HTTP module on your behalf by giving it an example of the endpoint you want to integrate with from the API documentation.

Build your own app

When scaling your business and automation efforts, managing all your webhooks and HTTP integrations can become challenging. In these cases, it may make sense to build a custom app. To help with this, we’ve developed a free custom apps development training course with 38 lessons and 4.5 hours of video content. https://partnertraining.make.com/courses/custom-apps-development-training

Agility in the development process and the ability to effectively collaborate, iterate, and deploy confidently are all critical to good app development. This is why we recently released Local Development for Apps in beta in a new version of our Visual Studio Code extension.

Core to this update is the desire to empower users to work and collaborate more efficiently, iterate faster, and gain full control of changes, history, and deployment for their app. Local Development for Apps has already been making a big impact with Maker users as you can read about here - https://www.make.com/en/blog/giving-developers-tools-go-further

Looking to the future

We know that there is much still to be done to secure a future of seamless connectivity. As an example, there are currently over 6,000 app ideas in the Make Idea Exchange. But this only highlights how bright the future is. One key development which is helping us of course is the rise of AI. We’re currently exploring ways to provide even greater flexibility leveraging AI. Watch this space…
